What is Espionage Software? What is Keystroke Monitoring Software?

Espionage software (snoopware, spyware, nonviral malware, hackers utility, surveillance utility, Trojans,.) is any hidden (stealth, invisible) software program that aids in unauthorized gathering different information about a person or organization without their knowledge. It records such information as every keystroke, including system keys, all AOL/ICQ/MSN/AIM chat conversations, all websites visited, all windows opened and interacted with, every application executed, every document printed, all texts and images sent to the clipboard etc. in a log file on the PC hard disk or network disk. Such software may also transmit captured info to a pre-determined internet address (relay it to other interested parties).

Keystroke loggers also walk the fine line between security administration and security breach. As with scanners and sniffers, the question comes down to intent. Some companies use commercial loggers to monitor employees suspected of resource misuse. While most employees might feel this invades their privacy, such monitoring can be useful for capturing of corporate spies. Law enforcement agencies may also use keystroke loggers to gather evidence on suspected criminals. On the other hand, staffers may download freeware keystroke loggers from hacker warez sites to turn the tables and illicitly spy on their boss or coworkers. reports Jay Heiser from Infosecuritymag.com ("Combating Nonviral Malware", May 2002) >>

Usually Keylogger is the basic part of anyone's Espionage or Activity Monitoring Software.

If you want to find out how many various monitoring and anti-monitoring products and tools are there in the world now, and also how many firms are engaged in their development and manufacture, please look here >>

Why is this a problem?

Keystroke monitoring software, as everything else, created by man, can be used both for the welfare and to the detriment of a computer user, company and government organization.

All confidential information is passed through the keyboard and reaches the PC. This includes all passwords, usernames, identification data, credit card details, and confidential documents (as they are typed), etc.

On the one hand, keystroke monitoring programs are an essential part of "trusted computing base", and it allows to control "unauthorized access to information". It is a powerful management tool for companies, which want to increase their productivity and profitability.

On the other hand, keystroke monitoring program may be misused. A Bad Boy can obtain confidential information, such as credit card numbers or access passwords by using these programs. Some of monitoring products are freeware and can be quickly downloaded and installed on any computer, anywhere, at anytime, even by users without credit cards!

How easily espionage (keystroke monitoring) program can be installed?

Keystroke monitoring software may be distributed and installed locally, i.e. through floppy disk, networks, etc, or it may be distributed remotely. Keystroke monitoring program may be enveloped in a Trojan or virus, and be distributed via email. More advanced keystroke monitoring program will then email the recorded key logs silently - the user will never know it is there! For example - the newest computer viruses send email messages with infected attached files, as well as install spying Trojan component to steal information from infected systems.

Why there were no programs, which were able to detect all espionage (keystroke monitoring) programs?

"Anti-virus" and "anti-nonvirus malware" programs (the formal definition of malware is "malicious software" or "unwanted code") provide an efficient protection against known malicious programs only. They detect virus and nonvirus malicious programs (Trojans, keyloggers, etc.) which are well documented and published anywhere. The formal definition of malware is "malicious software" or "unwanted code". Why? Because "anti-virus" and "anti-nonviral malware" utilities are capable to detect ONLY KNOWN virus and nonvirus malicious programs, which can be analyzed by their developers, and only then signatures of these malicious programs can be included into appropriate bases.

But there is an another group of espionage (keystroke monitoring) programs, which is more dangerous for privacy - UNKNOWN virus and nonvirus malicious programs. They are developed in limited quantity (often only one copy) for solution of the concrete task (intelligence gathering software, surveillance software, eavesdropping software, data interception software, industrial espionage software, economic espionage software, competitor intelligence software, foreign intelligence software etc.). These unknown programs are little-publicized and less documented. They can't be analyzed by in-home specialists of the companies, developing different security utilities. So the signatures of these malicious programs can't be included into appropriate bases.

And so all different security utilities (anti-virus products, Trojan scanner, etc.) are not able to provide privacy in full range because these security utilities are not designed to find UNKNOWN nonvirus malicious programs.

Our Philosophy

We are firmly convinced that advanced anti-monitoring products can be solely designed by the company (a group of specialists), which at the same time is able to design decent monitoring software products. Exactly such in-house specialists form the cornerstone of Raytown Corporation LLC.

Raytown Corporation LLC in-house specialists have studied a great variety of monitoring and anti-monitoring products and tools. These people, according to the reliable surveys held by independent international experts, presently design one of the best shareware monitoring products in the world.

Software should be reliable and efficient. With more and more anti-monitoring software developers today shifting their focus towards pattern-matching analysis, we hope to offer you a fresh alternative - Anti-keylogger (Unlike the typical anti-virus approach, it does not rely on pattern-matching, so it may work on new or unknown types of monitoring programs). If you find our software useful please support our efforts by purchasing our software. You can help us to grow, and we hope to bring you more useful software in the future!

The plethora of point solutions in the malware-defense space demonstrates that there's no magic wand for protecting against all forms of unwanted code. Because a defense-in-depth approach is the only way to control malware, expect to see continued announcements of multiproduct bundling, market consolidation and acquisitions, and new types of controls being added to existing products. reports Jay Heiser from Infosecuritymag.com ("Combating Nonviral Malware", May 2002) >>
