- PC Tools Spyware Doctor
The spyware-smashers at PC Tools continue to improve Spyware Doctor in every way they can think of. Since my review of version 3.5 they've given it a more informative main status page, added scanning of IM messages for suspicious links, armored the product against attack by the bad guys, and, most important, enhanced its spyware-removal skills in a number of ways. Many of the changes are invisible, but my tests show that the product is definitely keeping pace with the latest malware technology. As with Spy Sweeper 5, our other Editors' Choice in this area, your $29.95 (direct) gets you all program updates for a year, not just spyware definition updates. That's a very good thing, because PC Tools frequently slips in new features between the releases of officially numbered versions. -- From PC Magazine
In tests performed by AV-Test.org, Spyware Doctor ranked second overall among the five antispyware products tested for the "Spyware Specialists" story. Version 3.8 detected 90 percent of adware and spyware samples and disinfected 50 percent of adware-infected files and Registry entries (a first-place ranking). -- From PC World
Spyware Doctor is unsurpassed in its ability to catch spyware and protect your system against unauthorized changes. In our tests, Spyware Doctor caught every culprit we threw at it and a few tracking cookies we didn’t even know about. And Spyware Doctor is also effective at protecting against attacks on the Windows environment, including Hosts file protection, Layered Service Provider protection, Domain Name System protection and Messenger service restriction. -- From FCW.com
Spyware Doctor from PC Tools Software is a polished and solid contender in the antispyware category. Sporting a sleek and easy-to-use interface, Spyware Doctor also packs a lot of protection under the hood and is backed up by one of the most aggressive spyware identification programs in the business. In testing done by CNET Download.com, Spyware Doctor did very well, finishing near the top of the list for removing known spyware and tying for fourth with Webroot Spy Sweeper for overall performance. Since the December 2005 Download.com tests, PC Tools has released Spyware Doctor 3.5, which, in addition to other minor enhancements, offers advanced rootkit protection (a feature we did not test for in other apps). Spyware Doctor costs $29.95, which entitles you to 12 months of technical support, software upgrades, and live updates to its antispyware definitions. -- From CNET.com
- CA eTrust AntiSpyware
For a company that does a lot of enterprise business with its eTrust line of security offerings, Computer Associates has maintained a user-friendly interface for its rebranded eTrust Spyware Doctor Anti-Spyware (the company acquired Spyware Doctor this past summer). If you take a few seconds to click through its settings, Spyware Doctor provides decent spyware removal. -- From PC Magazine
CA eTrust Spyware Doctor aggressively scans your PC system for spyware, Trojan horses, and many other software pests. With its easy-to-use interface and extensive configuration options, eTrust Spyware Doctor is an excellent spyware-protection choice for home or office. However, based on testing done by Download.com, CA eTrust Spyware Doctor finished at the bottom of our list for removing known spyware, and it was dead last in overall performance. CA eTrust Spyware Doctor costs $29.95, about what you'd pay for other antispyware apps. -- From CNET.com
- Webroot Spy Sweeper
For the latest release of its antispyware, Webroot has teamed with Sophos, a well-known U.K. vendor of computer security products, to incorporate virus protection. The developers also tuned this version to reduce its use of memory and other system resources. You can purchase a single license for $39.95; a three-computer license for just $10 more; or the base antispyware product, sans antivirus, for $29.95. All include signature and program updates for a year. The software completely integrates the virus and spyware protection; you see one schedule, one update mechanism, one on-demand scanner, and one set of real-time protective shields. -- From PC Magazine
In tests performed by AV-Test.org, Spy Sweeper ranked first among the five products tested for "Spyware Specialists." It detected 90 percent of actively running adware and spyware samples and four of nine active rootkits. In disinfection tests, it cleaned up 40 percent of adware and 65 percent of spyware. In real-time detection tests, Spy Sweeper detected all additions to HKCU and HKLM Run keys (Registry keys targeted by many malware threats) and to Windows Startup and the Hosts file. It also detected all changes to the Hosts file and Internet Explorer Home and Search pages. -- From PC World
Webroot's Spy Sweeper is well known for being one of the better spyware detection and removal programs. Version 4.5 offers improved speed during system scans while still supporting an impressive list of advanced features and options. In testing done by Download.com, SpySweeper finished at the top of our list for removing known spyware and tied for fourth place with PC Tools Spyware Doctor for overall performance. Spy Sweeper costs $29.95 at the start, plus there's an annual subscription fee to keep your signature files updated beyond one year. -- From CNET.com
- Norton Internet Security 2007
With the 2007 release, Symantec's Norton Internet Security takes a clear new direction. The suite does its level best to stay out of your face-instead of asking confusing questions it makes its own decisions. And the design strives to limit the utility's impact on system performance (a common complaint in earlier versions)-to the point of omitting some modules in its default configuration. Your subscription gets you all updates for a year and lets you install on three computers. -- From PC Magazine
- ZoneAlarm Anti-Spyware
ZoneAlarm Anti-Spyware (ZAAS) adds spyware protection to the potent ZoneAlarm firewall in the same way ZoneAlarm Antivirus adds antivirus: by giving you ZoneAlarm Pro minus the identity and privacy-protection elements. We evaluated ZAAS specifically for its ability to remove spyware from infested systems and prevent clean systems from becoming infected, though. -- From PC Magazine
ZoneAlarm Anti-Spyware is the latest stand-alone application from venerable Zone Labs, long respected for its excellent free firewall software. Here, ZoneAlarm Anti-Spyware uses this firewall technology to specifically address spyware, providing a deep level of protection; unfortunately, it also requires a significant amount of user intervention until it learns your system. In testing done by CNET Download.com, ZoneAlarm did very well, finishing near the top of the list for removing known spyware, and it finished second only to Lavasoft Ad-aware for overall performance. ZoneAlarm Anti-Spyware costs $29.95 for one year of updates and is also included in ZoneAlarm Pro and in the ZoneAlarm Security Suite. -- From CNET.com
